4. Meaning and Definition of “Urban”

There is no single universally valid definition of an urban settlement. What is regarded as urban differs across countries, periods and statistical systems. Therefore, in geography the term is best understood through a combination of demographic, occupational, morphological, functional and administrative criteria.

4.3 City, town and urban area

Town and city are not universal scientific categories with fixed population limits. Their legal meaning varies.

Urban area is a broader analytical term and may refer to:

  • a statutory urban unit,
  • a continuous built-up area,
  • an urban agglomeration,
  • or a functional urban region linked by commuting and economic interaction.

4.4 Exam-ready definition

An urban settlement is a spatially concentrated settlement characterised by comparatively high population density, a predominantly non-agricultural occupational structure, complex economic and social functions, specialised land uses, developed infrastructure and formal institutions of governance.


5. Nature of Urban Geography

Urban Geography is a branch of human geography concerned with:

  1. the location and distribution of towns and cities;
  2. their origin, growth and evolution;
  3. their internal spatial structure;
  4. relations among settlements in an urban system;
  5. social, economic and environmental processes operating within cities;

7. Theories of Urban Origin — with Special Reference to Carter

Urban origin is not explained satisfactorily by one cause. Cities emerged through combinations of:

  • environmental opportunity,
  • agricultural surplus,
  • economic specialization,
  • trade,
  • political power,
  • defence,
  • religion,
  • transport,
  • technology,
  • social organisation.

7.1 Carter’s geographical framing

Carter’s discussion of urban origins is valuable because it asks why the origin of urbanisation became a geographical problem. Three ideas are especially useful:

  1. Environmental explanation

    • early urbanism was linked to particular physical settings;
    • river valleys and fertile lowlands could support agricultural surplus;
    • surplus helped support non-agricultural specialists.
  2. Diffusion

    • once urban traits developed, they could spread from one region to another;
    • urbanism should therefore be studied in both its places of early development and routes of spread.
  3. Evolution / historical transformation

    • cities are not static;
    • urbanism develops through successive changes in economy, institutions and social organisation.

Critical point

The factors that explain the origin of a city are not necessarily the same factors that later explain its growth.

8. Major Theoretical Explanations of Urban Origin

8.1 Hydraulic / river-valley explanation

Early cities are associated with fertile alluvial valleys where:

  • irrigation could raise productivity;
  • surplus could sustain non-farming groups;
  • water management required organisation;
  • central authority could emerge around control of resources.

Strength: links environment, food surplus and administration.
Limitation: not all early cities depended on large irrigation systems.


8.2 Agricultural surplus theory

Urbanism becomes possible when food production exceeds immediate subsistence needs.

8.3 Trade theory

Cities may develop at:

  • route intersections,
  • river crossings,
  • ports,
  • caravan points,
  • market centres,
  • strategic exchange locations.

Trade:

  • concentrates merchants and artisans,
  • encourages storage,
  • produces market institutions,
  • links rural surplus with distant demand.

Limitation: trade can flourish without creating large cities unless political and institutional conditions also support concentration.


8.4 Defence theory

Fortified settlements may emerge where people cluster for security.

Important conditions:

  • political instability,
  • border locations,
  • strategic heights,
  • walls and fortifications,
  • military-administrative centres.

Limitation: defence may explain site choice but not all later urban functions.


8.5 Religious theory

Sacred centres may attract:

  • pilgrims,
  • priests,
  • markets,
  • artisans,
  • accommodation and services.

A ceremonial nucleus may gradually become an economic and political centre.


8.6 Political-administrative theory

Political power can create cities through:

  • royal capitals,
  • tax collection,
  • courts,
  • military administration,
  • bureaucracy,
  • public works.

The concentration of surplus through taxation and tribute can support large non-agricultural populations.


8.7 Childe’s “Urban Revolution”

V. Gordon Childe used the idea of an Urban Revolution to distinguish the new city from the Neolithic village.

Five grouped dimensions useful for an answer

  1. Size — a major increase in settlement size and density
  2. Population structure — occupational specialization and social stratification
  3. Public capital — monumental buildings and collective investment
  4. Records / exact sciences — writing, accounting and mathematics

9. Critical Evaluation of Urban Origin Theories

A strong 18-mark answer should not present one cause as universal.

Strengths

  • reveal the importance of surplus;
  • recognise environmental opportunities;
  • connect cities to political organisation;
  • explain specialization and trade;
  • highlight historical processes and diffusion.

Limitations

  • risk of environmental determinism;
  • early evidence is uneven;
  • origins varied across civilizations;
  • same factor may create different outcomes in different regions;
  • origin and later urban expansion should not be confused;
  • no single model explains Mesopotamian, Indus, Chinese, Mesoamerican and later urban traditions equally.

Concluding line for exam

Urban origin is best understood as a multi-causal historical process in which surplus production, social organisation, trade, power, technology and environmental opportunity interacted differently across regions.

12. Burgess as the Starting Point

Although the syllabus names Kearsley modified Burgess, understand the original logic first.

Burgess’s concentric-zone model envisages urban land uses arranged broadly around a central core:

13. Kearsley’s Modified Burgess Model

Kearsley (1983) revised the Burgess framework for the modern metropolitan city.

13.1 Why modification was needed

Post-war cities showed:

  • suburbanisation;
  • decentralisation of employment;
  • slum clearance and redevelopment;
  • government housing and public intervention;
  • gentrification;
  • ghettoisation;
  • commuter settlements;
  • satellite towns;
  • low-density peripheral growth;
  • new centres beyond the historic CBD.

13.2 Core idea

Kearsley retains the usefulness of Burgess as an organising framework but recognises a much more fragmented and extended metropolis.

13.3 What to write in evaluation

Strengths

  • more realistic than simple concentric rings;
  • incorporates decentralisation;
  • recognises government intervention;
  • reflects suburbanisation and social fragmentation;
  • connects inner city and metropolitan fringe.

Limitations

  • still inherits some concentric logic;
  • developed largely from Western metropolitan experience;
  • real cities may be strongly shaped by history, topography, informality and transport;
  • boundaries between zones are rarely sharp.

14. Harris and Ullman — Multiple Nuclei Model

Harris and Ullman proposed that a city often develops around multiple specialised nuclei, not one single centre.

14.1 Main idea

Different activities:

  • require different locations;
  • benefit from clustering with compatible functions;
  • avoid incompatible neighbouring uses;
  • respond differently to land prices and accessibility.

14.3 Four location principles

  1. Some activities require specialised facilities.
  2. Similar activities benefit from proximity.
  3. Dissimilar activities may repel one another.
  4. Some activities cannot afford the most expensive land.

15. White’s Model of the Twenty-First-Century City

White’s model revises the classical concentric idea for a city transformed by:

  • deindustrialisation;
  • a service economy;
  • automobile dependence;
  • suburban residential growth;
  • decentralisation of business;
  • changing family structures;
  • stronger public-sector intervention.

15.2 Component explanation

1. Core

The CBD remains symbolically and functionally important, particularly for:

  • administration;
  • corporate offices;
  • culture;
  • entertainment.

2. Zone of stagnation

An older inner zone may suffer from:

  • disinvestment;
  • obsolete industrial or warehousing functions;
  • demolition;
  • transport restructuring;

3. Pockets of poverty and minorities

Low-income and marginalised groups may be spatially concentrated in deteriorated neighbourhoods. These pockets are not necessarily one complete concentric ring.

7. Epicentres and corridors

New commercial and service centres develop:

  • at major junctions;

15.3 Evaluation

White is useful for modern fragmented metropolitan form, but:

  • remains based strongly on Western-city experience;
  • does not automatically capture informal urbanism;
  • rapidly changing digital, environmental and mobility systems create new forms beyond the model.

17. Urban Hierarchy

Urban hierarchy refers to the ordering of settlements according to:

  • population size;
  • functional complexity;
  • centrality;
  • service provision;
  • sphere of influence.

18. Christaller’s Central Place Theory

Walter Christaller explained the size, number and spatial arrangement of settlements serving surrounding market areas.

Central place

A settlement that supplies goods and services to a surrounding area.

Complementary region / market area

The area served by a central place.

Threshold

Minimum demand or population needed to support a service.

Range

Maximum distance consumers are willing to travel for a good or service.

18.2 Main assumptions

Classical theory assumes an idealised isotropic plain:

  • even population distribution;
  • similar purchasing power;
  • uniform transport conditions;
  • rational consumers;
  • consumers use nearest centre;
  • sellers seek viable markets.

These simplify reality so that settlement patterns can be modelled.

18.3 Why hexagons?

Circular market areas would either:

  • leave gaps, or
  • overlap.

Hexagons tessellate the plane without gaps and allow a neat theoretical hierarchy.

18.4 K-values / principles

K = 3 — Marketing principle

Lower-order centres are arranged to maximise market accessibility and minimise consumer travel.

K = 4 — Transport principle

Centres align more strongly with efficient transport routes connecting higher-order centres.

K = 7 — Administrative principle

Lower-order market areas fit more completely inside the administrative territory of a higher-order centre.

18.5 Hierarchical logic

Higher-order centres:

  • are fewer;
  • are farther apart;
  • provide specialised services;
  • have larger market areas.

Lower-order centres:

  • are more numerous;

Central Place Theory is best treated as a powerful normative model of settlement order, not as a literal map of actual cities.


19. Rank-Size Rule

The Rank-Size Rule relates the population of a city to its rank in the urban system.

19.2 Interpretation

A system close to rank-size distribution suggests a relatively balanced hierarchy.

A primate-city pattern occurs when the largest city is disproportionately larger than expected.
